Pikes Peak

Today’s the day!

Or so we thought.

Today was the day to send Pikes Peak, but nature had different plans.

The summit was open yesterday, so we figured it would be open today too. Right?

Wrong.

Avalanche in the making

Again, things don’t always go as planned and a freak blizzard came in last night and closed the summit. We didn’t find this out until we got to the gate to go into the park and were a little bummed we could only get to 13,000 feet, not to the 14,115 foot peak.

I was totally okay with that and content to drive to where we could, take in the stunning views, let the kids play in the snow, and head on to the next place.

Justin was disappointed we could only get to the 13,000 point. Surely it would open up later that day. Surely it couldn’t be that bad. Maybe if he went around the rangers and acted like a vendor…

Begrudgingly, he admitted defeat and we went back down the mountain. I felt bad that he couldn’t achieve his goal of getting to the summit, but was a little relieved we weren’t going any higher. The drive this far was beautiful, but a little nervewracking for my taste.

We came off the mountain, grabbed lunch, took it to nearby Cheyenne Mountain State Park and let the kids play on another Colorado playground in an idyllic setting.

Man was it windy up there! I figured if it was this windy at a lower elevation, what would it be like at the top of Pikes Peak? I did not want to find out!

Poor Embry still wasn’t feeling well, so we packed it in and went back to the camper. Her foot was starting to make me nervous and her energy level wasn’t getting any better.

Aubyn was begging Justin to take her on the incline, so we came up with a new game plan for the day. I’d stay with the littles at the camper and the 2 of them could go climb the steps.

As they climbed away, poor Embry came down with a fever and was more pitiful than before. I looked up nearby clinics to take her to if things didn’t change soon.

While excited for Aubyn and the adventures she was having, my heart was with Embry who was having a completely opposite experience. She wasn’t enjoying any of this. Edley and Avett are along for the ride and are having the best time no matter what we’re doing, but sweet Embry is missing out on so much and you never want that for your child.

Praying her fever breaks and she is feeling better in the morning.
