Last Leg
Sigh.
The last day.
We’re ready to get home, but we’re sad too.
This trip has been incredible. Truly one of a kind and just our style.
It was perfect and I can’t believe it’s coming to an end.
The stress of being home is starting to pile up on me and we’re not even there yet. In fact, we haven’t even pulled out of our friends’ drive yet. Those worries can wait.
Hugs all around and we’re off!
A quick stop at a gas station just down the road and we should be home by lunch!
We’re on Germantown roads weaving our way to the interstate, when all of a sudden…
BAAAMMM
What?
What the heck was that?
“Noooooooooo.”
Justin looks for a place to pull off. I can sense its serious, but scared to ask. I look at Justin and try to read his face. Then I look out my window and see a black pole just dangling back and forth.
Crud.
He sees a school and pulls off and climbs onto the roof of the camper.
It’s not good.
He had seen the huge branch hanging over the road, but thought there was enough clearance. It looked like a branch the city had cut back, but didn’t give much attention to detail - just chopped it halfway and left the rest.
We crossed our fingers and hoped it was just the awning.
It wasn’t.
The big awning was ripped and the arm was broken, and when hit, it was knocked back into the smaller awning over the back slide. Worse though was the bust in the fiberglass at the front of the RV.
Justin says it’s not that deep of a crack and he can fix it then color match, but I hate that this is something he’s now on his list of things to do. His list is already long, and it’s not even a honey-do list.
Ugh, not how you want to end a trip.
Somehow, he bungeed the awning and was able to secure it. As for the arm, he took it off and stuck it in the car.
And like that, we hobbled home.
But, we can’t end like that! No way. We’re too positive to let a tree put a damper on this entire trip!
So Justin and I talked about what we just did. How we actually pulled it off. And it was great! We weren’t sure we’d be able to do it, but we did. And noone lost their mind!!! Even me (except kind of)!
We didn’t do it perfectly, but we did a pretty darn good job. And we learned a ton - about dispersed camping, timing a drive, what to bring, scheduling downtime, and so much more, like the fact that I hate mountain roads! Oh, and that Edley can not be trusted with a cup. She will spill it. So any suggestions for leak free/spill free cups, not a sippy, for a 5 year old are greatly appreciated.
Favorite part of the trip:
Avett- the Arch in St. Louis
Aubyn - All of it
Edley - the pool and the sand
Embry - not sure
This was a grand adventure to see if we would even like traveling like this and would we want to do more of it.
I gotta say…we kinda loved it!
Now on to decide where to go to next…
